These are often considered non-color colors. However black is the only non-color, being the absence of all color, whereas white is the perfect balance of all colors together. Grays are the shades of white and black combined.
White symbolizes goodness, innocence and purity, marriage and birth. White also represents cleanliness, sterility, reverence, humility, simplicity, precision. However, in some parts of the Far East white is a color symbolizing death and mourning.
Black also often signifies mourning and death in the Western world. But black signifies power and authority, intelligence, sophistication and elegance, as well. Black evokes strong emotions. It is sexy, stylish and timeless. But black also represents evil, remorse, submission, sadness, fear, the underground, counter-cultures, Goth.
Grays are monochromatic shades of black and white. All three being neutral colors, they all go with nearly any other color. Black, white, grays and neutral shades of other colors serve well as backgrounds and backdrops.
