Horses have appeared in art all through history, even as far back as 16,000 years with horses found in prehistoric cave paintings such as those in the Lascaux caves, and was very common in Greek and Roman artworks. Horses appeared often in war and battle paintings, and victory statues.
Though equine subjects in early Christian and Byzantine art was less prevalent, the Renaissance brought a resurgence with such notable artists as Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, Raphael and Titian portraying horses in their masterpieces.
Horses have endured as favorite subjects in horse racing scenes, hunting scenes, in rural and working scenes, and to this day in American West portrayls.
