Pop culture, or popular culture, was first coined in the 19th century in reference to education and culturedness of the "lower classes." Today pop culture and its mass media appeal is still viewed as a "dumbing down"to a find consensus amongst a majority. Pop culture today is often criticized for superficiality, its consumerism, its sensationalism and its corruption.
Art-wise, much has been said the same, however art movements throughout history have had similar criticisms, only to be recognized by history as a bona fide movement. Pop art of the 60s and 70s introduced styles that are regarded in museums throughout the world today.
Postmodern pop culture relies on an unprecedented symbiotic relationship with mass media and the entertainment industry, and intertwined with consumerism than ever before. "Art" can be created with the push of a button and any photographic snapshot can be printed on a canvas. Music is resampled from other artists music. Nonetheless, today's artists do strive forward exploring new and exciting movements, some which appeal only to few, some which shares a mass appeal in pop culture.
The Gallery of the Arts is currently developing this Pop Culture Gallery. Please check back soon.
