Primitivism philosophically is the notion that life was more moral in the early stages of humanity and has degenerated with the advance of civilization. In the visual arts, primitivism can mean art that reflects these values borrowing technique and form from prehistoric peoples. It can also refer to a self-taught artist. Generally it is in reference to works of tribal art from Africa, Asia or South America, but also Intuit art and other Native American tribes.
