Realism

Realism in its strictest definition is a true-to-life style that depicts as the eye sees without idealization. Realism has many variants and classifications. Classical realism, a late 20th century movement, holds emphasis to skill and beauty, whereas Nouveaux Réalistes, or new realists, expressed the world as an image from which they could pull parts to incorporate into their art.

Fantastic realism maintains realism's characteristics, but combines in religious and esoteric symbolism. Photorealism is the genre of realistic painting that lends itself to photographic qualities, whereas romantic realism combines elements of romanticism and traditional realism.

There is also heroic realism, super realism or hyper realism, magic realism, naturalism, social realism. Figurative art, illustration, portrait painting, and photography could also, technically speaking, be considered realism.
