Surrealism was birthed out of the Dada movement primarily in Paris in the late 1920s. Surrealism, a revolutionary art movement and philosophical expression, often employs elements of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur.
Many art critics viewed surrealism as absurd or nonsensical, but the surrealism movement eventually affected not only the visual arts, but also literature, film, music, political thought, philosophy and social theory.
"We are still living under the reign of logic: this, of course, is what I have been driving at. But in this day and age logical methods are applicable only to solving problems of secondary interest." --The First Surrealist Manifesto
