Watercolor painting in modern terms dates back to artist Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) who had used watercolor painting fine landscapes, wildlife and botanical subjects. However early painters used watercolors primarily for sketches and cartoons.
Watercolor became a popular medium in the US mid-19th century. Today, watercolors are one of the most popular painting mediums used. Watercolor painting offers artists many ways to express themselves with its transparency attributes, washes, glazes, papers and various uniques techniques, such as wet-in-wet, or dry brush. Gouache is an opaque style of watercolor.
